January 25th Meeting
Washington Update

Our presenter for our January 25th meeting will be Congressman Darin LaHood who represents the 16th Congressional District of Illinois which includes parts of Rockford and Winnebago County.
Congressman Darin LaHood, born and raised in Peoria, serves the constituents of the 16th District of Illinois. Originally sworn into the US House of Representatives on September 17, 2015, after winning a special election, he won re-election to serve his fourth full term in Congress on November 8, 2022.
From 2015 to 2023, LaHood represented the 18th Congressional District, serving much of central and west-central Illinois. Following a redistricting process, LaHood was drawn into the new 16th Congressional District.
The 16th District spans 21 counties across central and northwestern Illinois, ranging from McLean County (BloomingtonNormal) and Peoria County (Peoria) to Winnebago (Rockford) and Jo Daviess (Galena). LaHood serves over 725,000 constituents.
Prior to his election to Congress, LaHood served four years in the Illinois State Senate, beginning in 2011. LaHood spent more than nine years as a State and Federal Prosecutor. From 2001-2006, he worked for the U.S. Department of Justice as an Assistant United States Attorney in Las Vegas, Nevada and was selected as the Chief Terrorism Prosecutor. LaHood has also served as an Assistant State's Attorney in Cook County and Tazewell County. From 2006 up until his election to the House of Representatives, he practiced with the Peoria law firm of Miller, Hall & Triggs.
LaHood currently serves on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee after being selected by his colleagues in January of 2018. The Ways and Means Committee is the House’s oldest committee and has jurisdiction over all taxation and other revenue-raising measures, trade and tariffs, healthcare, and Social Security. LaHood serves as the Chairman of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Work and Welfare and is a Subcommittee on Trade.
In March of 2021, LaHood was appointed to serve on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. The committee oversees the nation’s intelligence agencies including components of the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Justice, State, Treasury and Energy.
In January of 2022, LaHood was appointed to serve on the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party. The Committee will examine the threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party, including economically and militarily, and work to strengthen American competitiveness.
During his time in Congress, LaHood has a strong conservative record of leadership for his constituents in Illinois, promoting economic development, fiscal responsibility, protecting American jobs, and support for our nation’s law enforcement community and America’s national security interests. LaHood has been an outspoken advocate for creating a better business climate, reducing our federal deficit, advocating for better international market access for Illinois farmers, lowering taxes for working families, and supporting the needs of rural healthcare providers and patient access. He believes strengthening America’s national security is essential to combat foreign threats from China, Russia, and Iran and making America more competitive globally.
LaHood also serves on the House Democracy Partnership and currently co-chairs the bipartisan US-China Working Group, Digital Trade Caucus, U.S.-Lebanon Friendship Caucus, and Congressional Soccer Caucus.
LaHood, a third-generation Peorian, graduated from Spalding High School. He earned a B.A. from Loras College and holds a J.D. from the University of Illinois-Chicago John Marshall Law School. An enthusiastic athlete, he has completed five marathons and enjoys hiking, biking, and backpacking.
Congressman LaHood and his wife Kristen currently reside in Peoria and are the proud parents of three sons, McKay, Lucas, and Teddy.
The Congressman will bring us to date on the latest news from Washington and in particular, the House of Representatives.  This will be an interesting and informative program and one you will want to bring a guest or prospective member.  We would encourage all of our members to attend in person at Memorial Hall or via zoom.  And remember that whatever your political leanings, Rockford Rotarians are always courteous and respectful to our guests and presenters.
John Mecklenburg will introduce our presenter and act as Rotary host.

Two New Rockford Rotarians

At our January 11th meeting, President Pete introduced two new members to Rockford Rotary.  Pam Timmons who was sponsored by Mary Maxted and Mark Brynteson who was sponsored by Linda Niemiec.  We would encourage our members to make an effort to meet them and welcome them to Rockford Rotary.
Pamela Timmons is a Senior Solutions Advisor for Independence Village in Rockford for the past four months. She earned a bachelor’s degree in biblical studies and elementary education from a small college in Minnesota. Her past work experience has included a variety of supervisory job positions including being the Center Director for nine years at Upper Iowa University (Fayette, Iowa) for the Rockford and Janesville extension campuses until the campuses closed May 2023
She and her husband live in Rockford with their goldendoodle dog, Gibbs. They are active members at First Free Rockford. They have two married sons and four grandchildren so when Pam is not at work she enjoys spending time babysitting grandkids, knitting, and baking.
As of press time, we had not received any information on Mark Brynteson but it will be forthcoming in a future issue of the COG.

January 11th Meeting Recap
President Pete inducted our two newest members, Pam Timmons and Mark Brynteson, as we welcomed them into the Rotary Club of Rockford.

Chama, our youth Exchange student from Thailand, captured hearts today with a very engaging honest and brave program about her life in Thailand, why she wanted to be a youth exchange student, what’s been easy and not so easy as she adjusts to high school at Pecatonica High School and how the exchange experience is helping her reach her goal of becoming a psychiatrist. She plans to help people who have mental health issues needing medication. Chama described herself as a ‘shy girl‘ but our members saw how brave she is as she gave an honest and engaging talk and sang a beautiful song acappella. We look forward to seeing more of Chama. In fact, our club is seeking one more family to host Chama for the last few months of her Exchange Year. (April, May, June). Please talk with Paul VonDriska with questions and/or interest in getting to know Chama as a Club host family.

President Pete followed Chama’s talk with lots of small gifts that the Club & our members gave her AND we all sang Happy 16th Birthday as we all got to celebrate it with her….cake, hats, beads and FUN!!! What a great addition she is to our club and District. Attending today’s meeting to hear Chama’s presentation were host parents Eric & Christy Moe and long-time District 6420 leaders in our Rotary Youth Exchange Program, PDG Tom Brooks and David Smith.

Members catch the noon party spirit.

WHAT ARE THE ROTARY PEACE FELLOWSHIPS?

Each year, Rotary awards up to 130 fully funded fellowships for dedicated leaders to study at Rotary Peace Centers at universities around the world.

Through academic training, practice, and global networking opportunities, these professionals develop their capacity to become effective catalysts for peace. Rotary Peace Fellows earn either master’s degrees or professional development certificates in subjects related to peace and development.

Since 2002, the Rotary Peace Centers have trained more than 1,500 fellows who work in over 115 countries in education, in government roles, and at international organizations.

Rotary members like you can shape the next generation of peace leaders by identifying and interviewing potential candidates.
